Delivery Costs About 80% More Than the Same Order Picked Up

LendingTree put the average delivery premium at 79.5% over walking in. The markup starts on the menu itself, before a single fee line appears, and customers say 10% is what feels fair.

Delivery Costs About 80% More Than the Same Order Picked Up

Everyone knows delivery costs more. Almost nobody knows where it costs more, which is the part worth understanding.

Multiple studies land in the same range, with different methodologies producing different exact figures:

  • LendingTree: delivery averages 79.5% more than picking up the same meal.
  • FinanceBuzz: DoorDash 95%, Grubhub 93%, Uber Eats 80% above in-store.
  • Self Financial: DoorDash 71.1%, Uber Eats 69.4%, Grubhub 65.8%.

The spread comes from which chains and cities each study sampled. The floor across all of them is roughly two-thirds more; the ceiling approaches double.

Chain-level extremes go further. In the FinanceBuzz sample, Chick-fil-A orders ran 82% (Uber Eats) to 149% (Grubhub) above in-store menu prices.

The markup starts before the fees

This is the piece that surprises people. The fee lines at checkout, delivery fee, service fee, small order fee, tip, are visible and get all the anger. But a large share of the premium is applied on the menu itself: the restaurant lists a higher price on the app than it charges in the building.

That is deliberate and, from the restaurant's side, close to necessary. Platforms take commission on the order total, commonly 15-30%. A restaurant that lists identical prices on-app and in-store is selling delivery orders at a fraction of its normal margin, or at a loss. So operators inflate app menu prices to recover it. Uber Eats even exposes a "menu markup" metric to merchants: the practice is a known, measured part of the system.

The result is a stacked structure:

  1. Inflated per-item menu price
  2. Delivery fee
  3. Service fee (usually a percentage, so it scales with step 1)
  4. Taxes on the inflated total
  5. Tip, often suggested as a percentage of the inflated total

Steps 3 and 5 compounding on step 1 is why the total lands so far above where it feels like it should.

What customers think is fair

The gap between expectation and reality is the interesting number here. Surveyed customers consider around a 10% markup reasonable for the convenience. When customers actually notice the menu markup, only about 22% say they would complete the order.

That is not a small perception gap: it is close to an order of magnitude between the accepted premium and the delivered one. It is also why the markup is disclosed in a metric merchants can see and a place customers rarely look.

Making it cheaper without giving up delivery

  • Order direct where the chain has its own app. First-party apps skip platform commission, and chains route their best offers there deliberately, about 70% of QSR sales were expected to run digital by the end of 2025 and they want them in-house.
  • Compare the app price to the real menu price. If the sandwich is $8.49 on the app and $6.79 on the board, you already paid a 25% premium before any fee appeared. Our menu price pages are the in-store number, which is the one apps are marked up from.
  • Pick up on flat-fee-heavy orders. Fixed fees hurt small orders most; the delivery premium on a $12 order is brutal and on a $60 family order is merely bad.
  • Watch the percentage fields. Tipping on a total that has already been inflated twice means tipping on the markup.

Delivery is a genuine service and the drivers earn theirs. The argument here is only that you should know which portion of that 80% is convenience and which portion is a menu you never saw.
